Fun, friends and exams

If you read my last blog you will know of my lifelong love of horses. For much of my life it has been at the forefront of my thoughts when it came to leisure time. In my spare time I worked with my friend Jill at her yard, near Halesworth, from the mid 80s until I started my own business in 2001. These were some of the best times in my life. I met many new friends equine and human, and learnt loads.

Having always ridden everyone else’s horses I was thrilled to eventually have one of my own. Noushka was a big bay Irish Draught x Thoroughbred, and she was a bolshy madam in the stable to boot! Nevertheless I loved her to bits and we did lots of competitions together. During that time I also began to learn, through Jill, to teach others to ride, and in 1984 I passed my B.H.S.A.I. exams and became a qualified instructor. Over the next 10 years I spent every Saturday teaching others, young and old.

Around this time I sold Noushka on and bought a super little horse called Twiggy. She was a Welsh cross Thoroughbred, and became the love of my life for nearly 25 years. We did everything together - long rides in the countryside, show jumping, eventing, and dressage. She even won many Veteran classes in her old age. I lost her in her 30th year from a horrible condition called Twisted Gut. I doubt now if I will ever own another horse, especially one as good as as she was.

Throughout our years together I knew every inch of her, from her favourite itchy, scratchy spots, to the scars from injuries sustained in competitions, to her soft and gentle eyes. Just this week I was photographing a horse at Jill’s yard and we were standing outside what used to be Twiggy’s stable, and it was very poignant for me. I could almost feel her there. Silly I know, but I had spent so many hundreds of hours in that barn that it is a major part of my personal history.

I am excited at the prospect of bringing some fabulous equine portraits into view over the next few weeks. This is an expanding area of work for me and I am so enjoying combining these two loves of my life.

More news soon.
