My Blog

Welcome to my Blog page. Here you will find out what I have been up to each month, with images and stories from my commissions.

Learning, laughing and more...

Sunday 31st January 2016

Every year in mid-January two photographer friends and I attend the Society of Wedding & Portrait photographers (SWPP) annual conference at the London Hilton Metropole Hotel in London. It is one of the few times a year when our many friends and colleagues who work in the photography industry come together for several days to learn new things at lectures and workshops.

In addition there are photographers taking formal Fellowship qualifications there, which are judged by the top judges in the industry. These exams are what I aspire to be able to undertake in a few years, as they are the top of the tree in the SWPP and highly regarded. Being able to watch the judging of these panels of these, quite frankly, astounding images was fascinating.

I was also able to watch the judging an Associateship panel.  This Associateship is the next qualification that I am  working towards acheiving in 2016, and leads you upwards towards your Fellowship. Personal development is such an important area in my business. It can easily be swallowed up by other tasks, and fall by the wayside whilst I earn a living. Focussing on growing my skills is of course of immense benefit to my clients, as the work I do for them reaches a higher level with each new commission.

It is also the chance for us to socialise, meet new friends and generally have a good time! We popped out for Afternoon Tea one day at the Berkeley Hotel. An indulgent afternoon with friends Angela and Belinda saw us eating beautifully flavoured finger sandwiches, miniature scones and a choice of many teas to go with our savouries. Next came the fashion inspired cakes and biscuits... truly beautiful works of art and delicious too! Teas especially recommended for drinking with cakes were also served! When we couldnt finish it all we had a beautiful little doggie bag each to take our leftovers home. Mine is now empty but gracing the bookshelf in the lounge!

Our week was rounded off in great style with the annual SWPP awards dinner. Here the trophies and awards are announced Oscar nominee style to around 500 of us in our best frocks and DJs. We have had the same table of 10 of us for 3 years now and have had some real success stories amongst us. The week passed so quickly, and we are all looking forward to next year already!
